Virtualization and the Data Protection Connection
In an ideal world, protecting data and applications on a virtual machine would be as simple as protecting those on a physical machine – install your backup agent on each virtual machine and proceed with business as usual. The great advantage in this approach is that your data protection administrator uses only one product and process for physical, virtual, mixed, or migrating environments – both on the backup and recovery side. During consolidation, as physical resources are virtualized, the data protection element is essentially seamless with this approach. In reality, however, this ideal has several big obstacles.

Stock service's data warehouse now delivers in seconds, not hours
Last year, Pink OTC began testing a data warehouse using a columnar database from Vertica Systems Inc. and high-speed data-integration software from SyncSort Inc. "Reports that used to take two hours to run now can show up 10-15 seconds later," said Rahul Bose, director of application development for Pink OTC.
The reports can be generated on stock quotes and trades executed as recent as 5 seconds ago. That virtual real-time performance is enabled by SyncSort's DMExpress software, which the vendor says can load 5.4 TB of data into the Vertica data warehouse in an hour, and the three server cluster now running Vertica in production.

Meeting Virtual Server Data Protection Needs
There are a number of different backup solutions available today that provide varying levels of support and functionality for the VMware environment through VCB integration and support. There are a few though, which in addition to traditional VCB support also provide additional or extended capabilities and functions beyond VCB, which are optimized specifically for the VMware environment. Syncsort's BEX 3.1 is a good example of a solution that provides this type of extended functionality for the VMware environment.

Syncsort Joins the VMware Technology Alliance Partner Program
As customers seek to not only virtualize their smaller applications and test development servers, but also move critical applications into production on VMware Infrastructure, the ability to maintain application performance and meet the same demanding RPOs and RTOs that production apps require becomes a concern. Syncsort's Backup Express (BEX) has been architected to integrate seamlessly with VMware to reduce network traffic, storage requirements, and backup windows by more than 90% with little or no impact on the performance of applications.

Application Aware Storage and Protection
In storage, its easy to forget that it is all about the application, especially when it comes to protection and more importantly recovery of that application. Companies like NetApp, SyncSort and AppAssure are all now offering solutions that have a more intimate, application aware understanding of specific applications that are critical to the enterprise; Exchange being the most common, but some are including support for SQL and SharePoint as well.

Better Storage Practices to Improve Backup
Backup is the thorn in the side of many otherwise smoothly running IT operations. The truth is that backup should be simple -- all you're doing is copying data to tape. The problem in general has nothing to do with the backup process, it has more to do with how primary storage is managed and optimized.

Performance: Making Databases and Applications Work Faster
Just like professional race cars, enterprise systems are measured by their performance. The faster they can perform their tasks effectively, the better. Monitoring performance can be done all kinds of ways, however, and the list of means for improving performance grows longer every day. Tune into this episode of DM Radio as we explore several major avenues for measuring, monitoring and improving the performance of enterprise applications and databases.

The Problem with Snapshots
Snapshots sound like the ‘be all and end all’ for covering yourself from some sort of data disaster but it is an overused term and sometimes can mean different things to different suppliers. When a snapshot is "taken" you are actually only copying this primary index. This is very small and takes less than a few seconds, if that, to complete. The blocks that are referenced by the snapshot are then put into a read-only mode and can't be changed or deleted.

Is Mainframe Regaining Its Mojo? Some Say Yes!
What goes around, comes around -- even in the case of the venerable mainframe. Once the dominant force in enterprise technology, some say the mainframe took a back seat for years as chip and computer manufacturers made remarkable strides.
